Joelle, thanks for your thoughts on the subject. We'll simply disagree. As I wrote there are a few people who are able to pull it off well, but by in large as guys are getting started my three reasons have better odds of being accomplished through a manuscript than no notes. You may not need it and that's great, but MOST people starting out will greatly suffer with no notes. Thanks again for taking the time to read my post and for leaving your thoughts. It's much appreciated.

None or your reasons require a manuscript. Barebones framework (with copious notes on points as needed) is my method. My brother uses a manuscript which works the best for him. When I've used them my sermons suffer... and so do the people in the congregation.

This is a style issue not a discipline issue.

Totally agree, Arthur. My notes are a home, not a prison. They free me to follow the Spirit while insuring I don't silence Him.

Hey Dave, thanks for the disclaimer. I'm def not arguing for reading of a manuscript. To me it's less about the style of note and more about insuring you've taken the time to think through what you're going to say. The style of note will differ based on the preacher.

[...] 3 Reasons I Manuscript: While I’m fully aware that different preachers require different types of notes, I also believe that every preacher should cut their teeth on the discipline of some form of manuscript. I believe this for the same reason I believe guitar players should learn to play an acoustic prior to an electric: It helps you cultivate healthy habits. [...]

[...] Ryan Huguley explains why “every preacher should cut their teeth on the discipline of some form of manuscript” and, as a teacher of homiletics and expository preaching, I strongly agree with him. [...]
