Hi.

Welcome to my site. My goal is to keep you connected to everything happening in my preaching and writing ministries. Thanks for following along!

Five on Friday, 12.13.14

Five On Friday is the content I have found most helpful, funny, or interesting this week. Just because I share them does not mean I agree with, nor endorse everything they assert. Enjoy!

What Does the X in Xmas Mean?

R.C. Sproul

"X can mean so many things. For example, when we want to denote an unknown quantity, we use the symbol X. It can refer to an obscene level of films, something that is X-rated. People seem to express chagrin about seeing Christ’s name dropped and replaced by this symbol for an unknown quantity X. Every year you see the signs and the bumper stickers saying, “Put Christ back into Christmas” as a response to this substitution of the letter X for the name of Christ."

Five Habits For Holiday Happiness

Nicole Whitacre

"So often we step into the holiday season on the wrong foot. We abandon the paths of comfort and joy so clearly marked out for us in God’s Word and pursue happiness in the holiday instead. We hope that cookies and carols will somehow numb the pain or distract us from everything we feel is wrong with our lives. Or we just grit our teeth, plaster on a grin, and pray it’s over soon.

But the way to peace and joy hasn’t changed because it’s Christmastime. Rather we have to be all the more intentional about seeking the Savior at a time when the distractions, and sometimes even the trials, are many."

Rethinking Our Holly-Jolly Christmas Songs

Russel D. Moore

"Sometimes I learn a lot from conversations I was never intended to hear. This happened once as I was stopping by my local community bookstore. It’s a small, quiet store, so it was impossible not to eavesdrop as I heard a young man tell his friend how much he hated Christmas. And, you know what, the more he talked, the more I understood his point.

This man wasn’t talking about the hustle and bustle of the holidays, or about the stresses of family meals or all the things people tend to complain about. What he hated was the music."

10 Reasons NOT To Enter Pastoral Ministry

Thom Rainer

"Certainly the blessings of ministry far outweigh the realities below, yet ministry is definitely not easy. That is why pastoral ministry must be a calling and not simply a “job”. If you can’t reconcile with these 10 difficult realities and challenges concerning pastoral ministry, then perhaps you should avoid it all together."

The Most Beautiful Ruined Moment

Sharon Edwards

"Dear Master Jedi,

This is an open letter of deep appreciation to you. I hope that somehow it finds its way to your computer screen..."
