The Doctrine Of God's Sovereignty Is Not Just For Nerds
Theology is intensely practical. While many view theology as a topic of interest to only a select group of nerds with a strange love for boring books by dead guys, theology has everything to do with everyday life. The sovereignty of God is a great example of just how practical theology is. When we say God is sovereign, we’re saying that God is always in control of all things at all times in all places. This is very good news for us because life has a way of killing any notion that we’re in control.
In July we drove to Florida as a family for a summer vacation with my parents. Eighteen hours in the car + three kids under the age of seven = one intimidating task. By God’s grace our kids were amazing, but our trip got off to a rocky start. We left Chicago at 3am and didn’t make it to Atlanta for the night until after 6pm. I helped Tami and the kids get checked into the room and then went down to unpack the car. When I got back to the room not ten minutes later, Tami was holding a screaming Lincoln (2yrs) and both were covered in blood. Lincoln had tried to jump on the bed like his brother and sister but fell off and split his forehead open on the nightstand. With that, Lincoln and I were back in the car and off to the ER where we would spend the next four hours. Thankfully, the staff was amazing and they were able to simply glue the gash shut. He was fine by the next morning.
We’ve all experienced situations like this. Situations that remind us that no matter how careful we are, no matter how diligently we plan, and no matter how crazy controlling we try to be - we are simply not in control. When I finally got to bed after midnight I just kept thinking that all Lincoln had to have done was turn his head inches to the left or the right and he would have hit his temple, doing serious, possibly even fatal damage. I went to bed that night again reminded that I had no control.
If we’re honest with ourselves, each of us has very limited control over much of anything in our lives. Maybe you’re facing this reality right now. Maybe there's a relationship you just can’t fix, a job you can’t seem to find, a health issue you can’t change, a loved one who doesn’t know Jesus, or an area of sin you can’t seem to kill. We all face a host of circumstances we can’t control on a daily basis. This is why God’s sovereignty is so intensely practical.
Though you and I are nearly never in control, God always is. There’s never been one second nor one circumstance in which God wasn’t 100% in control of all that was happening. When your life spins beyond your control, God’s got it. When circumstances are overwhelming, God’s not stressed. When nothing makes sense and everything seems beyond repair, God is in control. Let God’s Word inform your thinking:
Psalm 115:3 - “Our God is in the heavens; he does whatever he pleases.”
Psalm 135:6 - “Whatever the LORD pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all the deeps.”
Jeremiah 32:27 - “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?”
Matthew 19:26 - “…with God all things are possible.”
Whatever you’re facing, struggling through, or wrestling with - rest today in the practical reality that God is sovereign and thus in control of all things at all times in all places.
