Is God good?
This question about God’s character and capability plagues more people than any other. Almost daily we hear someone asking the question, “How could a good God allow such suffering in this world?” Perhaps we have asked it ourselves. How indeed?
We live in a world that is filled with physical, mental, emotional, political, and relational suffering. If we’re honest, we’ve all wondered how God could be good and yet allow these things to happen. Why does He not intervene?
7 Reasons People Might Hate Our Preaching...
Every preacher knows the discouragement of looking out on an obviously disengaged audience - glassy stares, confused looks, slowly closing eyes just moments from a nap - it's awful. While some of the responsibility lands in the laps of our listeners, most of the responsibility is ours as preachers.
Our job is to "rightly handle the word of truth" (2 Tim.2:15). That's the command the apostle Paul gave young Timothy - a green, insecure, uncertain pastor in a jacked up situation.
I am part of a tribe that takes this task seriously. We preach the Word week in and week out. We don't play games with God's Word. But, if we're not careful we can make the mistake of believing that faithful preaching means nothing more than mere accuracy. I believe Paul's encouragement to Timothy begs more than accuracy alone.
Here are seven reasons people might hate our preaching (even if it's Biblically accurate)…
Is God With Me?
Big Idea:
God is intimately involved in the lives of His people.

“Is God with me?”
This seemingly simple question is deeply theological. If we’re honest, we’ve all asked it at one time or another. No matter who we are, we’ve gone through seasons of life when God feels distant, unresponsive, even absent. Even when we read our Bibles faithfully and pray earnestly, we can find ourselves wondering, where is God? Is He with me? Is He involved in my life?
When we feel this way, it’s crucial that we allow God’s Word – not our circumstances, experiences, and thoughts – to shape our belief about God.
Consider these two characteristics that give us a Biblical concept of God:
Does God Love Me?

The cross serves as the clearest display of Christ’s love for me.

There is no more destructive doubt we can have than to wonder whether or not God really loves us. Confident faith in God’s love is the very basis of our relationship with Him. When we doubt His love, instead of having the relationship God wants to have with us, we have one marked by shame, avoidance, and defensiveness.
There are two primary reasons we struggle to believe God could love us:
- The things you've done. Conceiving of God’s love may be difficult because of sexual sin, substance abuse, or just selfish pursuits that mark your life, past or present.
- The things done to you. You may feel unworthy of God’s love because of past abuse, abandonment, or betrayal. You may feel dirty, used, or unlovable.
Jesus & My Doubts
Big Idea |
Jesus knows, engages, and dispels the doubts of His people.

One thing we all have in common, whether we are Christians or non-Christians is this: Every one of us has doubts about God. Even if we don’t doubt His existence we do question His character and His capability. We wonder: Is God who He says He is? Can He do everything He claims?
See, it's never a question of whether we doubt, it’s a question of how we deal with our doubt. As Christians, we have to confront our doubt with the Word of God in order to strengthen our faith.
5 Bad Reasons To Pursue Vocational Ministry...
Big Idea | “You should pursue vocational ministry because you’re called by God, not compelled by circumstance and emotion.”
“How do I confirm if God’s calling me into full-time vocational ministry?”
This
is a question I’m being asked more and more. Young people, old people,
rich people, poor people, successful and established people - I’m
encountering a growing number of people considering a call to full-time
vocational ministry - vocational, meaning “paid".
Every Christian is called to “full-time” ministry. There is never a season, time, or circumstance in which a follower of Christ is not to minister the good news of Jesus to those around them. Baristas and bartenders, students and stay-at-home moms, business people and bankers, those in construction and childcare, medical providers and machinists - all of us are to always minister to those God providentially places in our lives.
Because every Christian is called to full-time ministry, I always want to know why it is an individual feels called to ministry vocationally. You may think, “Who cares? They want to serve Jesus, so what does it matter why they want to?” Well, it matters a lot. The truth is, there are a great many BAD reasons to pursue vocational ministry - Here are the five most common I hear

How To Pray Like Jesus
BIG IDEA |
Prayer promotes relationship with God.
(For full sermon audio, listen here...)
Many of us don’t pray or we feel very insecure when we do, because we’re uncertain HOW to pray. Prayer is not about getting what we want, forcing God’s hand, or fulfilling a religious obligation. It’s about relating with God.
If anyone is going to teach you how to pray, wouldn’t you want it to be Jesus? The good news is He has done exactly that in Matthew 6:5-15.
When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, it’s important to note He advised them to “Pray then like this” (v.9) He didn’t say “pray this specific prayer” or “pray these exact words”. While we shouldn't pray this prayer mindlessly, Jesus did provide us with five signs, or categories to guide our prayer life:
Dependence: The Heart of Prayer
BIG IDEA |
"The shape of your prayer life is determined by the size of your dependence."
The Real Reason We Don't Pray
Few things breed discouragement in the heart of a Christian like the topic of prayer. We experience an ongoing disconnect between the Bible’s clear command that we pray and our consistent failure to do so.Our failure to pray is fraught with excuses. See if you can find yourself in one of these five reasons we fail to pray:
3 Ways To Improve Our Preaching
Big Idea
"Nothing improves preaching like constant prayer, effective preparation, and frequent reps. "
Improving your preaching gift is like dieting for weight loss - progress develops over time and doesn't happen overnight. It's hard work. Slowly, week after week and sermon after sermon, you begin to learn a few things. Eventually, they say, you find your voice (I'm still working on this).
Busy People & The Bible
Few things keep Christians from consistent time in the Bible like busyness.
We are busy with school, busy with work, busy caring for kids, busy with hobbies, busy at church, and busy with relationships.
We are a busy people.
How To Prepare For Weekend Worship
If we’re honest, many of us show up to weekend worship services distracted, unprepared, and often times, more than a little late. This is sad when we consider the nature of what we’re invited into when we gather for corporate worship.
Ever prayed for something God didn't grant?
Of course you have. We all have. Some of us have begged, implored, and pleaded with God to move in a particular manner and been left feeling like our prayers fell on deaf ears. In my experience, one of the primary reasons people struggle to believe in the goodness of God is unanswered prayer
God Is Greater Than The Zombies...And Whatever You're Facing
Imagine you walked into church one Sunday and everywhere you looked were zombies. Not real zombies, of course. Because of course, there aren’t real zombies, or are there? Anyways...
Imagine you walked into a worship service one Sunday and everywhere you looked were zombies.
6 Steps To Prep A Sermon Start To Finish
D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones said, “The work of preaching is the highest and the greatest and the most glorious calling to which anyone can ever be called.” I’m so thankful to be a preacher. It’s my favorite part of being a pastor. While I love the act of preaching, I often find the art of prepping sermons tedious. I love to study and preach what the Lord gives me. It’s the blood, sweat, and tears in between that makes me long for the time when I was a vocational coffee maker.
How To Comment On A Blog Like A Christian
We've all read them.
Some of us have even posted them - smug, condescending, even vile and angry blog comments. The comment section of a blog is often a cesspool of sinful speech.
And now begin the justifications.
"It's not sinful speech! They're wrong. Their doctrine wasn't just right. They don't think like I do. I don't like their opinion. I don't like their preaching, music, philosophy of ministry..."
I get it.
Ryder's Lightsaber Surprise...
It's pretty normal for Ryder to follow dinner with some sort of weapons demonstration. The lightsaber is typically his weapon of choice. He has three...
Why?
Because you just never know which one you're going to need, of course.
A Clinic On Corporate Scripture Reading
When God's Word goes forth is does exactly what God wants it to. There is never a time when the Bible is proclaimed to no end. The Scriptures succeed exactly as the Spirit would have them.
Because we believe these promises about God's Word, we seek every opportunity to share it. One of the ways we do this is by reading Scripture in our services, out loud, over our church.
He Will Sustain You
We've all experienced one of those seasons we simply didn't believe we could endure. One of those seasons where life was hard and we were so tired we just weren't sure we could take any more. A sickness. A job loss. A divorce. A death. The seasons change, but the fatigue remains.
I don't know about you, but my prayers tend to be more fervent in these seasons. Typically, they sound like this: "Lord, please deliver me out of this season. I can't take any more. I just want this to end. Please make it stop!"
Sharing The Gospel In 3 Parts
"Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words if necessary."
You've most likely heard some version of this quote, often attributed (incorrectly) to St. Francis of Assisi. The problem with this quote -- other than the fact that St. Francis never said it -- is that it forces an unnecessary, unhelpful, and unbiblical dichotomy between displaying the Gospel with one's life and declaring the Gospel with one's mouth.
While I wholeheartedly agree that Christians should live exemplary lives that display the work of the Gospel, the Bible doesn't hold this up as the definition of evangelism. Until you open your mouth and actually tell someone the good news about Jesus, you have not done the full work of Biblical evangelism.
6 Ways To Serve Your Pastor's Wife On Sunday
In many churches, the most thankless job is that of the pastor's wife. Though the pastor alone is paid, the pastor's wife is often still saddled with a host of responsibilities and expectations. She is expected to be a model wife, nurturing mother, friend to everyone, run a women's ministry, throw every baby shower, and cook every meal. These expectations are often unfair, unhelpful, and most importantly, unbiblical. "Pastor's Wife" is not a secret third office of church leadership. The Bible contains no job description for the pastor's wife, which is why extra-biblical expectations are often placed upon her.
